PNG–US Partnership Expands Women’s Entrepreneurship Training in Hiri-Koiari

Papua New Guinea’s efforts to empower women in business received a major boost after the Hiri-Koiari District and the United States Embassy signed a Memorandum of Understanding to extend the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) program. The initiative aims to strengthen local training and build long-term support for female entrepreneurs.

Ambassador Ann Marie Yastishock said the Embassy values strong partnerships and sees the AWE program as an important tool for inclusive economic growth. She noted that AWE was established in 2019 to provide women globally with the skills and networks needed to build sustainable enterprises.

The MOU positions Hiri-Koiari as an example for other provinces by rolling out the AWE curriculum without reliance on direct funding from the US government, allowing the district to take ownership of the initiative.

Hiri-Koiari MP Keith Iduhu thanked the United States for recognising the district’s commitment, saying the focus on women’s economic inclusion remains a priority for his leadership.

“I believe promoting women in the economic environment gives opportunities and ensures our women folk have the resources needed to participate in business,” Mr Iduhu said.
