Ruth Kissam Appointed as Steamships’ New Corporate Affairs General Manager

Steamships Trading Company has announced the appointment of Ms. Ruth Kissam as its new General Manager for Corporate Affairs, bringing a wealth of experience in advocacy, community engagement, and development work to the senior leadership team.

Ms. Kissam, a seasoned community organiser and human rights advocate, has spent more than 16 years working in development. Her career has included prominent roles across both public and private sectors, where she has led campaigns and initiatives with a strong impact on civil society and local communities.


Prior to her appointment, she served as Strategic Advisor with the United States Institute for Peace (USIP) and has held advisory roles with several international development agencies. She is widely recognised for her ability to foster collaboration among corporate, government, and grassroots partners, and currently serves on multiple boards.

Steamships Managing Director Chris Daniells welcomed Ms. Kissam to the team, noting her strong alignment with the company’s long-term goals. “Ruth brings a deep understanding of PNG’s social and economic environment, which supports our strategy for inclusive growth over the next three years,” said Daniells. “Her passion for human rights and sustainable development makes her a great fit for our vision.”

Throughout her career, Ms. Kissam has been a vocal advocate for marginalised populations and has played key roles in governance reform and strategic communication efforts. She is known for advancing sustainable business practices and strengthening ties between companies and communities.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Ms. Kissam said, “It’s a privilege to join Steamships. After years in the NGO and humanitarian sector, I’m eager to help connect community needs with corporate priorities. Steamships has a proud legacy in PNG, and I look forward to supporting its efforts to create shared value.”

Ms. Kissam studied Law at the University of Papua New Guinea and is an Obama Fellow at Columbia University and a Draper Hills Fellow at Stanford University.
